San Francisco's most popular destination. Known for its historic
waterfront, delicious seafood, spectacular sights and unique shopping,
Fisherman's Wharf offers a wide array of things to do for everyone. While
its focus may have changed, Monterey's Fisherman's Wharf is still a
working pier.
Chinese fisherman
in "junks" combed the San Francisco Bay for food that would feed the
bustling town. The bay was rich in crab and other fish, so this trawling
usually yielded a substantial catch. With the death of clams came a shift
in the best places to catch crab. Soon, fishermen focused on areas just
outside the Golden Gate. Today, crabbers must drop their pots out near the
Farallon Islands in 18 to 35 fathoms of ocean water.
One of the many
ways the old blends with the new is with whale watching and fishing trips.
Monterey is world-famous for its fine dining, and some of Monterey's best
restaurants are found on the Wharf. While there din on fresh Dungeness
crab or watch the wildly languorous sea lions.
Last year, almost
12 million people made their way to the Wharf, making the attraction an
ideal stop while staying in the San Francisco bay area. The location of
the 'City by the Bay', puts you within minutes of the Maritime Museum,
Alcatraz, and the world famous San Francisco Cable Car lines. Fisherman's
Wharf offers some of the most incredible views of the San Francisco Bay,
the Golden Gate Bridge and the cityscape. |
